Agave Americana Pups
$7 single plants with roots only.
Agave Americana, also referred to as the Century Plant, is a very large desert evergreen perennial forming rosettes of thick, spiny edged, blue green leaves up to 6 ft long and the entire plant reaching up to 10 ft wide. When flowering the stalk can reach heights of 15 ft and bears large greenish-yellow flowers.
- Easily grown in slightly acidic, sandy or gravelly, well drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade better than some other agaves. Additional water in dry summer months will encourage growth but DO NOT over water, especially in clay soils. Too much moisture can cause the roots to rot. Keep in a frost-free area in winter.
- Extremely heat and drought tolerant.
- Suggested row farming with 10 ft spacing per row with 10 ft between rows.
- Takes 8-10 years to mature and flower.
- Attracts hummingbirds and birds.
- Deer Resistant.
- Virtually disease free. Watch for scale insects.
- Propogation by off shoots (pups), bulbils, and by seed.
- Be Aware: Needle sharp spines on the leaf tips can be a hazard to humans and pets. Use caution, long sleeves, long pants, well covered shoes, and gloves when handling and cutting this plant.
- Native to the southern United States and Mexico
