There are three ways your average gardener can propagate an agave. It can be grown from seed, removed as a pup or sucker, or it can be done from pulling off bulbils (also called plantlets). Seed takes too long and in some cases you might not even end up with the same plant once grown up. Suckers are the easiest. Just wait until they have a nice root structure and remove them from the mother plant. Unfortunately, not all agaves like to make pups, so you are left with growing from seed or waiting for the plant to flower and make bulbils. What are bulbils? The definition is a small bulblike structure, especially in the axil of a leaf or at the base of a stem, that may form a new plant.”

Agave Tequilana, commonly called Blue Agave (agave azul) or Tequila Agave, is an agave plant that is an important economic product of Jalisco, Mexico, due to its role as the base ingredient of tequila. The high production of sugars, named agavins, mostly fructose, in the core of the plant is the main characteristics that makes it suitable for the prepartion of tequila and agave spirits.

This plant grows best in rich and sandy soils. Blue Agave plants grow into large succulents, with spiky fleshy leaves that can reach over 7ft tall and a diameter of up to 6 feet. Blue Agaves sprout a stalk (quiote) when they are about 5 years old. These stalks can grow an additional 16 ft and are topped with yellow flowers.

Tequila and Agave Spirits are produced from the heart (piña or cabeza). The piña is typically harvested in its 8th-12th year. One mature piña produces approximately 5 liters of spirits. The heart, resembling a giant pineapple, is stripped of its leaves near the base and cooked to convert raw starches into sugars.
